The Book of 1 John
1 John gives believers assurance of eternal life while confronting false teaching and moral confusion. The letter presents three interwoven tests of genuine fellowship with God: right belief about Jesus Christ, obedience to God's commands, and love for fellow believers. John insists that God is light and God is love. Those who claim to know God cannot walk comfortably in darkness, deny the Son, or hate brothers and sisters. Yet the letter also offers deep comfort: believers have an advocate with the Father, forgiveness through Christ's atoning work, and the witness of the Spirit. The purpose of 1 John is pastoral assurance. True assurance is not based on spiritual arrogance, but on abiding in the Son, receiving apostolic testimony, practicing righteousness, and loving because God first loved us.
