Made in His Image

Reflection

After five days of breathtaking creation, God paused. "Let us make mankind in our image," He said — the first time in the creation account that God deliberates before acting. Every other creature was spoken into being; humanity was fashioned by divine intention and divine hands. The image of God — imago Dei — has been debated by theologians for millennia. It likely encompasses our capacity for reason, creativity, moral awareness, relationship, and spiritual communion. It means every human being carries intrinsic worth — not earned by performance, not revoked by failure. God also gave humanity a mandate: rule and steward the earth. This is not a license for exploitation but a calling to responsible care. We represent God in creation — to tend, cultivate, and reflect His character in how we treat the world and one another. To look at any person — regardless of age, ability, ethnicity, or status — is to look at someone made in God's image. This truth dismantles contempt and commands dignity.

Background

In ancient Near Eastern cultures, only kings were said to bear the image of a god — a mark of divine authority. Genesis radically democratizes this concept: every human being, not just royalty, bears God's image. This was a countercultural declaration of universal human dignity.

Truth

Your worth is not determined by what you produce, how others see you, or what you have accomplished. It is grounded in who made you. You are image-bearers of the living God — and that can never be taken from you.

Application

Think of one person you have struggled to show dignity to. Remember they bear the image of God just as you do. Ask God for the grace to see them through His eyes today, and let that change one interaction.
