Bible Fact · Matthew 6:9 — 'Pray then like this: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.'

The Most Prayed Prayer in History

The Fact

The Lord's Prayer (Matthew 6:9–13; Luke 11:2–4) is almost certainly the most prayed prayer in human history. It has been recited in every century since Jesus gave it, in over 2,000 languages, in cathedrals and prisons, at deathbeds and celebrations. Matthew's version has seven petitions: hallowing God's name, the coming of his kingdom, his will on earth, daily bread, forgiveness, deliverance from temptation, and rescue from evil. Luke's version is shorter — five petitions. Interestingly, the familiar doxology ('For yours is the kingdom...') does not appear in the earliest manuscripts of Matthew — it was added in liturgical use by early church communities. Jesus introduced the prayer with a caution against 'vain repetition' (Matthew 6:7), suggesting the prayer is a model of how to pray — addressing God as Father, aligning with his purposes, asking for needs, and seeking forgiveness — rather than a formula to recite.

Context

Jesus gave the prayer in the context of teaching against public performance of piety — fasting, giving, and praying done for human approval. The Lord's Prayer is intimate, direct, and focused entirely on God's priorities.

Significance

The Lord's Prayer is a theological condensed version of the whole gospel: God as Father, his kingdom coming, human need for provision, forgiveness, and protection.
