Deborah

Now Deborah, a prophet, the wife of Lappidoth, was leading Israel at that time.Judges 4:4

Biography

Deborah was a prophet and the only female judge of Israel, holding court under the Palm of Deborah where Israelites came to her for justice and guidance. When Jabin of Canaan oppressed Israel, she summoned Barak and commanded him to lead an army against Sisera. She went to battle personally when Barak hesitated. Her song of victory after the battle (Judges 5) is one of the oldest and most powerful surviving Hebrew poems.

Spiritual Lesson

Deborah models prophetic boldness and servant leadership. She did not seek the spotlight but sat where people needed God's wisdom. Her willingness to go personally to battle when Barak hesitated speaks to the courage of those who know that the Lord goes before them. She is a timeless witness that God's Spirit rests on those who are willing to stand for truth.
