Esther

And who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this?Esther 4:14

Biography

Esther was a Jewish orphan raised by her cousin Mordecai who became queen of Persia through remarkable providential events. When the wicked Haman plotted to destroy all the Jews in the Persian Empire, Mordecai urged Esther to intercede. Going to the king unsummoned was potentially fatal, but Esther requested three days of fasting and prayer from the Jewish community, then said: 'If I perish, I perish.' Through her courageous and strategically wise approach to the king, the Jewish people were saved and Haman's plot was reversed.

Spiritual Lesson

Esther shows that God positions his people in places of influence 'for such a time as this.' Her story teaches that courageous action begins with prayer and fasting, not impulsive heroism. The name of God never appears in the Book of Esther, yet His providential hand is visible on every page. When we cannot see God directly, we are invited to look for the shape of his fingerprints in events.
