Hosea
“For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and acknowledgment of God rather than burnt offerings.”Hosea 6:6
Biography
Hosea was an 8th-century BC prophet to the northern kingdom of Israel whose marriage to an unfaithful wife, Gomer, became a living parable of God's relationship with Israel. Though Gomer repeatedly left him for other men, God commanded Hosea to take her back — at personal cost. His prophecy is one of the most emotionally raw in Scripture, oscillating between heartbreak over Israel's idolatry and God's undying love for his people. His name means 'salvation.'
Spiritual Lesson
Hosea's life embodies the painful truth that God's love for his people is not diminished by their unfaithfulness. His willingness to take back Gomer at cost reveals the heart of God who says: 'I will heal their waywardness and love them freely.' Hosea teaches that obedience to God flows from knowledge and love of him — not from ritual performance divorced from relationship.
