Mary, Mother of Jesus
“'I am the Lord's servant,' Mary answered. 'May your word to me be fulfilled.'”Luke 1:38
Biography
Mary was a young woman from Nazareth betrothed to Joseph when the angel Gabriel announced she would conceive the Son of God by the Holy Spirit. Her response — 'May it be to me according to your word' — became the model of surrendered faith. She was present at the wedding in Cana, witnessed Jesus's ministry, stood at the foot of the cross, and was gathered with the disciples in the upper room at Pentecost. Her Magnificat (Luke 1:46-55) is one of Scripture's great songs of praise.
Spiritual Lesson
Mary's 'yes' to the angel was not a small act — it would cost her reputation, safety, and eventually her heart ('a sword will pierce your own soul'). Her Magnificat reveals that she was a woman deeply formed by Scripture, weaving together Old Testament themes with profound insight. She models that the greatest response to God's call is not ability but availability: 'I am the Lord's servant.'
