Matthias

Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles.Acts 1:26

Biography

Matthias was chosen to replace Judas Iscariot as the twelfth apostle, chosen by lot from among those who had been with Jesus from the time of John's baptism through the resurrection. He met the criteria: he was a firsthand witness of the risen Christ. Beyond Acts 1, he is not mentioned again in the New Testament. Church tradition places his ministry in Ethiopia or Judea and records his martyrdom. He represents the invisible faithfulness of the unnamed witnesses to Christ's resurrection.

Spiritual Lesson

Matthias had walked with Jesus for three years without being part of the twelve — a faithful witness in the second row. When the moment came, he was ready. His story invites those who serve faithfully in obscurity: the watching, waiting, and witnessing that happens without recognition is not wasted. God keeps a different ledger than history does. Every faithful step taken in hiddenness is known to him.
