Naomi
“Don't call me Naomi. Call me Mara, because the Almighty has made my life very bitter.”Ruth 1:20
Biography
Naomi was an Israelite woman who lost her husband and both sons in Moab, leaving her with two foreign daughters-in-law. Her honesty with God — asking to be called 'bitter' rather than 'pleasant' — reflects raw grief that Scripture does not flinch from. She returned to Bethlehem empty-handed but with Ruth beside her. It was her guidance that led Ruth to approach Boaz as kinsman-redeemer. Naomi's story moves from emptiness to fullness: when Ruth bore Obed, the women declared, 'The Lord has not left you without a redeemer!'
Spiritual Lesson
Naomi's honesty in grief is itself a form of faith — she brought her bitterness to God rather than turning away from him. Her story teaches that God's story does not end in the middle of loss. The same hands she accused of emptying her were the hands that filled her again. Godly influence does not require a position of strength — even the broken can shape the faithful.
