Saul
“To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.”1 Samuel 15:22
Biography
Saul was Israel's first king — tall, impressive, initially humble. He began well but his reign deteriorated through repeated disobedience: offering sacrifices outside his priestly authority, sparing the Amalekite king against God's direct command, and consulting a medium at En-dor. He became consumed by jealousy toward David, spending his later years hunting the one God had chosen to replace him. He died in battle on Mount Gilboa.
Spiritual Lesson
Saul's tragedy is not that he lacked ability but that he lacked surrender. He preferred the approval of people over obedience to God, and his partial obedience proved to be disobedience. His story warns: spiritual gifts, impressive stature, and early success cannot substitute for a heart wholly submitted to God's word.
