Simeon
“Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you may now dismiss your servant in peace. For my eyes have seen your salvation.”Luke 2:29-30
Biography
Simeon was a righteous and devout man in Jerusalem who had been promised by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before seeing the Lord's Messiah. Led by the Spirit into the Temple courts on the day Mary and Joseph brought Jesus for dedication, he took the child in his arms, blessed God, and sang the Nunc Dimittis — one of the great hymns of Scripture. He also prophesied to Mary that the child would cause the rising and falling of many, and that a sword would pierce her own soul.
Spiritual Lesson
Simeon's 'now let your servant depart in peace' is the prayer of the completely satisfied soul — one who has seen what they were created to see. He held eternity in his arms and was ready to go. His song reminds us that everything else in life — however good — is the preparation for encountering Christ. When that encounter comes, it is enough. His quiet faithfulness across a lifetime was rewarded with the moment that made every other moment meaningful.
