Zechariah, Father of John

Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, because he has come to his people and redeemed them.Luke 1:68

Biography

Zechariah was a priest who was faithfully serving in the temple when the angel Gabriel appeared to him announcing that his barren wife Elizabeth would bear a son. When he doubted the angel's words, he was struck mute until John's birth — a discipline that also became a testimony. When he wrote on a tablet 'His name is John' (confirming the angel's instruction against all family tradition), his mouth was opened immediately and he spoke blessing. His song of praise, the Benedictus, prophesied over both John and Jesus.

Spiritual Lesson

Zechariah's silence was not merely punishment but a gift: it gave him nine months to reflect on what the angel had said and prepare his heart. When he finally spoke, what came out was not complaint but prophecy and praise. The person who waits in silence with God often speaks with greater clarity when the silence ends. His doubt became faith; his muteness became a song.
