Zephaniah

The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.Zephaniah 3:17

Biography

Zephaniah prophesied during the reign of Josiah and was likely of royal descent (his lineage is traced four generations back to Hezekiah). His prophecy swings from one of the harshest descriptions of the coming Day of the Lord to one of the most tender pictures of God's rejoicing over his people. He called Judah to repentance with urgency, but his closing vision of God singing over his gathered people is one of the most astonishing images of divine affection in all of Scripture.

Spiritual Lesson

Zephaniah 3:17 may be the most tender verse in the Old Testament: God is not merely tolerating his people — he is singing over them. This is not just comfort but revelation: the God who judges is the same God who rejoices. His love does not mute his holiness, and his holiness does not extinguish his love. The person who grasps both simultaneously has understood the gospel.
