Mount Nebo
Description
Mount Nebo rises above the plains of Moab in present-day Jordan, offering a panoramic view of the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea, and the hills of Judea. It was here that Moses climbed at God's command to see the land promised to Abraham's descendants. Moses died on this mountain and was buried in an unknown location.
Significance
Nebo represents both the grace and the justice of God: Moses saw the fulfillment of the promise even though he could not enter it due to his earlier disobedience. It also speaks of faithful servants who prepare the way without seeing the final fruit of their labor.
Key Events
God showed Moses all the Promised Land from Mount Nebo before his death at age 120 (Deuteronomy 34:1-5). Moses blessed the tribes of Israel before his final ascent (Deuteronomy 33). The book of Deuteronomy concludes with his death and the nation mourning thirty days for him.
Modern Context
Today a church and memorial atop Mount Nebo commemorates Moses, and a serpentine bronze cross stands as a symbol of his bronze serpent in the wilderness. The site is within Jordan and is accessible to Christian pilgrims, offering views that include Jerusalem on clear days.
