🇿🇦Andrew Murray

1828–1917 · South African · Pastor, Revivalist & Devotional Writer

The man who mobilizes the Christian church to pray will make the greatest contribution to world evangelization in history.

Biography

Andrew Murray was one of the most prolific and widely read Christian authors of the nineteenth century, a Dutch Reformed pastor in South Africa whose writings on prayer, holiness, and the deeper Christian life have nourished millions across denominational and cultural boundaries. Born in Graaff-Reinet, Cape Colony, to a Scottish father and a German mother, he was sent to Scotland and then Utrecht for his education, absorbing the Reformed and pietist traditions. He returned to South Africa in 1848 and was ordained in the Dutch Reformed Church, serving first in the vast frontier parish of Bloemfontein and later in Worcester and Wellington. Murray witnessed a remarkable revival in Worcester in 1860, which left an indelible mark on his understanding of the Holy Spirit's work. Deeply concerned for missions, he helped found the South African General Mission and was a champion of indigenous church planting. He suffered a prolonged voice illness in the mid-1870s that forced him to rest for two years; during this period he poured himself into writing, producing many of his most enduring books. Murray was influenced by the Keswick Convention and its emphasis on consecration and the fullness of the Spirit, themes that permeate his devotional writing. He wrote over two hundred books and pamphlets, making him one of the most productive Christian authors in history. His pastoral ministry spanned over sixty years.

Key Works

'Abide in Christ' (1882) meditates on John 15 and the nature of the believer's union with Christ. 'With Christ in the School of Prayer' (1885) remains one of the most comprehensive and practical guides to prayer ever written, exploring thirty-one aspects of prayer through the teachings of Jesus. 'Humility' (1895) is a brief but searching examination of the foundational Christian virtue. 'The Spirit of Christ' explores the person and work of the Holy Spirit. 'The Full Blessing of Pentecost' reflects Keswick themes. 'The Inner Life' and 'The Holiest of All' (a commentary on Hebrews) demonstrate his depth. 'Waiting on God' guides readers into contemplative dependence on God.

Legacy

Murray's legacy is that of the most widely read South African Christian author globally, with his books still reprinted and distributed across the world in dozens of languages. His influence on the global prayer movement is incalculable; countless prayer ministries trace their theological roots to 'With Christ in the School of Prayer.' He helped catalyze the South African revival of 1860 and influenced the global Keswick holiness movement. His emphasis on abiding in Christ and the fullness of the Holy Spirit continues to shape evangelical devotional life. Murray demonstrated that a ministry in a distant colony could produce literature of universal and lasting significance.
