Biography
Christiana Tsai (Cai Sujuan) was born in 1890 in Nanjing into one of China's most prominent Mandarin families. Her father held high office under the Qing dynasty, and she grew up in a world of privilege and traditional Chinese culture. She came to faith in Christ as a young woman through the influence of mission school teachers, an event that scandalized her family. Undeterred, she began to share her faith with others, and over the years, led more than fifty members of her own family to Christ, including her mother and brothers. Her evangelistic zeal and gentle witness were remarkable. However, in 1931 she contracted a severe illness that left her bedridden and highly sensitive to light for the rest of her life. She spent her final fifty-three years lying in a darkened room. Rather than allowing her illness to silence her, Tsai used her sickroom as a ministry base, receiving visitors, corresponding with hundreds, and writing. Her autobiography, Queen of the Dark Chamber, became an international Christian bestseller and has been translated into numerous languages. She died in 1984 at the age of ninety-four, a living testimony to joy in suffering and the sustaining grace of God.
