“We should not ask, 'What is wrong with the world?' for that diagnosis has already been given. Rather, we should ask, 'What has happened to the salt and light?'”
Biography
John Robert Walmsley Stott was the foremost Anglican evangelical theologian of the twentieth century, a man who shaped global Christianity through his preaching, writing, and advocacy for the Majority World church. Born in London and educated at Cambridge, he was converted under the ministry of E.J.H. Nash and ordained in the Church of England in 1945. He served All Souls Church, Langham Place, for the entirety of his ministry—first as curate, then rector, then rector emeritus—making it a model of urban evangelical ministry. Stott was a key architect of the Lausanne Covenant (1974), which defined evangelical identity and mission for decades. He championed a 'double listening' approach: listening carefully to Scripture and to the contemporary world in dialogue. He was deeply committed to the Global South church, founding the Langham Partnership to provide theological education and literature to pastors in developing nations. A lifelong bachelor who described himself as a 'single man in Christ,' he devoted his personal resources entirely to ministry and scholarship. Known for his intellectual humility, pastoral warmth, and ornithological passion, Stott modeled the integration of study, prayer, and action. Time magazine named him one of the hundred most influential people in the world in 2005.
Key Works
'Basic Christianity' (1958) became one of the twentieth century's most widely distributed evangelistic books, translated into over sixty languages. 'The Cross of Christ' (1986) is widely regarded as his magnum opus, a comprehensive theology of the atonement. 'The Message of the Sermon on the Mount' inaugurated the influential Bible Speaks Today commentary series, which he edited for decades. 'Christian Mission in the Modern World' (1975) articulated a holistic missiology integrating evangelism and social action. 'Issues Facing Christians Today' engaged contemporary ethical questions with biblical rigor. His New Testament commentaries—on Acts, Galatians, Ephesians, and the Thessalonian letters—remain standard evangelical references.
Legacy
Stott's legacy is felt in the Lausanne Movement, which continues to coordinate global evangelical mission, and in the Langham Partnership, which has trained thousands of pastors and scholars in the Majority World. His commentaries and books have shaped the biblical literacy of millions of laypeople and clergy worldwide. He demonstrated that evangelical faith could be intellectually rigorous without sacrificing pastoral warmth. His advocacy for the Global South helped shift the center of gravity of world Christianity. All Souls Langham Place continues to model his integrative vision of Word and world.
