Breakfast on the Beach
The Story
It is night on the Sea of Tiberias, and Peter has gone back to what he knows. "I am going out to fish," he says. Six others go with him. They fish through the night and catch nothing. As dawn breaks, a figure stands on the beach. "Friends, haven't you any fish?" "No." "Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some." This has happened before — three years ago, on this same lake, when a stranger told a fisherman to put out into deep water (Luke 5:1–11). Peter would have known it as he heard the echo. They throw the net. The catch is so large they cannot haul it in. John says to Peter: "It is the Lord!" Peter throws himself into the water. He is too impatient to wait for the boat. He wades to shore. When they land, they find a fire of burning coals, fish on it, and bread. A charcoal fire. The same phrase — in Greek, anthrakia — is used in John 18:18 for the fire where Peter stood when he denied Jesus. Jesus had started a fire. He had cooked breakfast. He invites them: "Come and have breakfast." After the meal, Jesus turns to Peter. Three times, Peter had denied him at a charcoal fire. Three times now, Jesus asks: "Simon son of John, do you love me?" Peter is hurt by the third asking. He says: "Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you." Three questions for three denials. Three "Feed my sheep" for three "I don't know him." The wound of betrayal is being addressed, confession by confession, with the repetition of grace. Jesus tells Peter what his future holds: "When you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go." It is a prediction of crucifixion — the death by which Peter would glorify God. Then Jesus says the same words he said three years ago on this same shore: "Follow me."
Background
The Sea of Galilee (also called the Sea of Tiberias or Lake Kinneret) was the home waters of Peter, Andrew, James, and John before Jesus called them. Their return to fishing after the crucifixion is understandable as both economic necessity and emotional retreat to the familiar. The catch of 153 fish is a detail that has fascinated interpreters — early commentators like Jerome noted it equals the total number of fish species known in the ancient world, suggesting the universal scope of the mission. The charcoal fire (anthrakia, used only twice in the entire New Testament, both in John) is widely seen as an intentional echo linking Peter's restoration to his failure.
Truth
The beach breakfast is the story of a broken disciple being reinstated — not despite his failure but through direct engagement with it. Jesus did not pretend the denial never happened; he addressed it precisely, three times for three, charcoal fire for charcoal fire. Restoration in the New Testament is never minimization — it is honest reckoning followed by grace and recommissioning. Peter is not restored to his former confidence; he is restored to relationship, and entrusted with a larger calling: "Feed my sheep."
Application
Jesus cooked breakfast for the man who had denied him three times and prepared the fire as an unmistakable reminder. He did not avoid the conversation — he started it, gently, over food. Is there a failure in your past between you and God that has never been directly addressed? Jesus is already on the shore, with a fire lit.
