Balaam's Donkey Speaks

Numbers 22:21–35

The Story

The prophet Balaam was riding his donkey to meet King Balak, who wanted him to curse Israel. Three times the donkey stopped — because she could see an angel of the Lord with a drawn sword. Three times Balaam beat her. Then God opened the donkey's mouth: "What have I done to you that you beat me three times?" Balaam answered her — before God opened his eyes to see the angel.

Did You Know

This is one of only two times in the Bible where an animal speaks — the other being the serpent in Eden. In both cases, the animal saw what the human missed. A serpent deceived; a donkey protected.

Takeaway

When we are blinded by our own agenda, God can speak through the most unlikely voices. Balaam — a professional prophet — missed the angel that his donkey clearly saw. Sometimes those with less status perceive spiritual reality more clearly than those who consider themselves experts.

Context

Balaam was hired to curse Israel because King Balak feared the Israelites passing through his land. Remarkably, Balaam could only speak what God put in his mouth — and every attempt to curse Israel turned into a blessing. God's protection extended even to the words of their enemies.
