Naaman: A General Healed by a Slave Girl's Word

2 Kings 5

The Story

Naaman was commander of Syria's army — powerful, victorious, but a leper. His Israelite slave girl told his wife: "If only my master would see the prophet in Samaria — he would cure him." Naaman traveled to Elisha's house. Elisha didn't even come to the door — he just sent a messenger: "Go and dip yourself in the Jordan seven times." Naaman was furious. His servants persuaded him to try anyway. He dipped seven times — and his flesh became clean like a child's. He returned and declared: "Now I know there is no God in all the world except in Israel."

Did You Know

Naaman's unnamed slave girl is one of the most overlooked heroes in the Bible. She was a foreign captive who had every reason to despise her captors — yet she directed the most powerful man in her world to the God she believed in. Jesus specifically cited her in His first sermon as an example of faith exceeding that of Israel's own people (Luke 4:27).

Takeaway

Naaman nearly missed his miracle because the method offended his dignity. He had expected a dramatic ceremony — instead he got: "Go wash in a muddy river." Many times God's path to healing requires us to do something simple that feels beneath us. Humility is often the final requirement before the breakthrough.

Context

Naaman's story matters beyond one man's healing. When he returned home, he asked to take two mule-loads of Israelite soil so he could worship God on it. He also asked for forgiveness in advance for when he would be required to bow in the temple of Rimmon with his king. Elisha's response: "Go in peace." God is merciful to those navigating faithfulness inside difficult circumstances.
