Peter Walks on Water
Matthew 14:22–33
The Story
During a storm at night, the disciples saw Jesus walking toward them on the water. Peter called out: "Lord, if it is you, tell me to come to you on the water." Jesus said, "Come." Peter climbed out and walked on the water. But when he saw the wind and waves, fear overtook him and he began to sink. Jesus immediately reached out and caught him.
Did You Know
Peter is the only human being in all of Scripture — besides Jesus — who ever walked on water. The miracle lasted only seconds, yet it happened. History belongs to those who step out of the boat.
Takeaway
Faith is not measured by how long you walk on water, but by whether you dare to step out of the boat. The moment Peter fixed his eyes on the storm instead of on Jesus, he sank. Our greatest danger often comes not from the storms around us but from where we choose to look.
Context
This event took place immediately after Jesus fed 5,000 people. The disciples had just witnessed an extraordinary miracle — yet faith still faltered in the storm. Miracles alone do not produce lasting faith; only ongoing relationship with Jesus does.
