Samson: One Against a Thousand

Judges 15:14–19

The Story

The Philistines came to seize Samson, who had been bound and handed over by his own tribe. The Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon him, the ropes snapped off his arms. He found the jawbone of a freshly killed donkey and struck down a thousand Philistines. Desperately thirsty afterward, he cried to God — and water came out of the hollow place in the jawbone.

Did You Know

After the battle, Samson named that place "Ramath Lehi" — "Hill of the Jawbone." The same weapon used for the greatest victory became the vessel for a personal miracle of provision. The instruments of spiritual warfare can also become channels of personal renewal.

Takeaway

God's power does not depend on conventional weapons or impressive resources. A jawbone. Five smooth stones. A shepherd's staff. Twelve ordinary fishermen. God consistently chooses the unlikely to accomplish the impossible — so that no human being may boast before Him.

Context

What makes this story striking is that Samson was betrayed and handed over by his own fellow Israelites before the Spirit came upon him. Even in the midst of betrayal by his own people, God's power broke through. Our effectiveness in God's purposes is not determined by the loyalty of those around us.
