Solomon's Judgment: Who Is the Real Mother?

1 Kings 3:16–28

The Story

Two women came to Solomon with the same story: each had given birth, but one baby had died. Each claimed the surviving child was hers. No witnesses existed. Solomon said: "Bring me a sword. Cut the living child in two — give half to one and half to the other." One woman said: "Yes, divide it." The other cried out: "No! Give her the child — don't kill him!" Solomon declared: "Give the living baby to the second woman. She is his mother." The word spread and all Israel feared the king, because they saw that he had wisdom from God to administer justice.

Did You Know

Solomon never needed to verify the verdict — true maternal love revealed itself without any investigation. The same method — creating a moment of truth where character is self-revealed — is still studied in psychology, law, and negotiation today. Solomon essentially invented what modern analysts call a "forcing function."

Takeaway

True wisdom sees what law alone cannot verify. Solomon asked God for wisdom rather than wealth, power, or long life — and God gave him all the rest as well. What we ask for in seasons of new beginnings reveals everything about what we truly value. "Ask for wisdom" remains the most rewarding prayer a person can offer.

Context

Solomon prayed for wisdom at the start of his reign, before his failures — and before his drift into idolatry in his later years. His early reign was Israel's golden age: the temple was built, trade flourished, nations came to hear his wisdom. His story is a reminder that gifts do not guarantee faithfulness — and that the best season of a life does not protect against the worst, unless wisdom is continually renewed.
