Prophecy
Summary
Prophecy is God speaking — through chosen messengers who declare his word to their generation and unveil his purposes for the future. Prophets were less fortune-tellers than covenant prosecutors, calling God's people back to him. Much prophecy is 'forth-telling' (proclaiming God's will now) as well as 'fore-telling.' And its great theme, woven across centuries, is the coming of the Messiah.

Did You Know
In the Old Testament
God promised to raise up prophets and put his words in their mouths: 'I have put my words in your mouth,' he told Jeremiah. Isaiah, centuries before, described a suffering servant 'pierced for our transgressions' with startling precision.
In the New Testament
On the Emmaus road the risen Jesus, 'beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, interpreted… the things concerning himself.' He is the key that unlocks prophecy. As Peter explains, the prophets spoke not on their own but 'as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.'
Common Misconception
Prophecy is often treated as a code for predicting end-times dates, or dismissed as vague guesswork. The Bible presents it differently: trustworthy because it comes from God, centered on Christ, and given less to satisfy curiosity than to call us to faith and obedience.
Application
Let fulfilled prophecy strengthen your confidence: the God who kept his word about Christ's first coming will keep it about the second. Read the prophets not to crack a code but to hear God's heart — and to live ready for the King who is surely coming.
