Worship

Summary

Worship is the response of the whole person to the worth of God — ascribing to him the honor he alone deserves. It is not confined to music or a meeting; it is a life turned Godward. We were made to worship, and we always worship something. The question Scripture presses is not whether we worship but whom — and the answer reorders everything.

In the Old Testament

The first commandment guards worship: 'You shall have no other gods before me.' Israel was called to bow, sing, and sacrifice before the Lord alone. Isaiah's vision of seraphim crying 'Holy, holy, holy' reveals worship as heaven's endless, central activity.

In the New Testament

Jesus said true worshipers will worship 'in spirit and truth' — no longer tied to one temple but anywhere, through him. Paul widens it further: 'present your bodies as a living sacrifice… which is your spiritual worship.' All of life becomes the altar.

Common Misconception

Worship is often equated with the singing portion of a service, or judged by how it makes us feel. But biblical worship is God-centered, not experience-centered. Its aim is his glory, not our goosebumps — and it is offered in obedience and ordinary life as much as in song.

Application

Examine what truly commands your time, money, and affection — that is what you worship. Then deliberately give God his place: in gathered praise, yes, but also in how you work, spend, and love. Make your whole life an offering.
