Kingdom of God
Summary
The kingdom of God is God's saving reign — his rule breaking into a rebel world to put things right. It is less a place than a power: wherever God is acknowledged as king, his kingdom has come. Promised through David's line and pictured by the prophets, the kingdom arrives in Jesus, advances through the church, and will be consummated when Christ returns to reign over a renewed creation.

In the Old Testament
God was always Israel's true King, but he promised David a son whose throne would last forever. The prophet Daniel saw 'one like a son of man' given an everlasting dominion — a kingdom that would outlast and crush every empire of the earth.
In the New Testament
Jesus began his ministry announcing, 'The kingdom of God is at hand.' In his healings and his cross the reign of God breaks in — already present in part, not yet fully revealed. The King who came in lowliness will return in glory to make all things new.
Common Misconception
Some shrink the kingdom to a private inner experience; others expect it as a political program now. Jesus taught it is both more spiritual and more total than either — a present reality you enter by new birth, and a future hope that will renew the whole world.
Application
Pray and live 'your kingdom come.' Let Christ's reign reorder your priorities, so that you seek first his kingdom and trust him for the rest. Work for justice and mercy now as signs of the kingdom, while you wait for the King to finish what he started.
