Sanctification

Summary

Sanctification is the lifelong process of being made holy — set apart for God and gradually transformed into the likeness of Christ. Where justification is a verdict declared in a moment, sanctification is a work carried out over a lifetime. It is God's work and ours at once: the Spirit renews us from within, and we cooperate by putting sin to death and pursuing righteousness.

Reading Plans

In the Old Testament

God called Israel, 'Be holy, for I am holy,' and gave them laws, feasts, and a tabernacle to mark them as a people set apart. Holiness was not mere ritual but the visible shape of belonging to a holy God in the midst of the nations.

In the New Testament

Jesus prayed, 'Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.' United to Christ, believers are freed from sin's mastery 'to lead to sanctification.' The Spirit produces real change, pressing us toward the holiness 'without which no one will see the Lord.'

Common Misconception

Two errors compete: thinking holiness is automatic ('let go and let God'), or thinking it is achieved by sheer willpower. Scripture holds both together — we work out our salvation precisely because God works in us. Effort and dependence are not rivals but partners.

Application

Don't measure your standing by your worst day or your best. Keep walking: confess sin quickly, feed on God's word, and trust the Spirit to finish what he began. Holiness grows in ordinary obedience, one choice at a time.
