Eternal Life

Summary

Eternal life is not just life that lasts forever but life of a new quality — the very life of God shared with his people. Jesus defined it as knowing God: 'this is eternal life, that they know you.' It begins now, the moment one trusts Christ, and reaches its fullness in the world to come. Eternal life is less about endless time than about an unbreakable relationship.

In the Old Testament

The hope of life beyond death grew slowly in the Old Testament, but it was there: Daniel spoke of awaking 'to everlasting life,' and the Psalms trusted that God's presence meant 'pleasures forevermore.' Life with God was always understood to be life indeed.

In the New Testament

Jesus is eternal life embodied: 'whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.' John sums it up: 'God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.' To have the Son is to have life; the gift is as near as Christ himself.

Common Misconception

Eternal life is often pictured as a reward you collect after death, or as endless harp-playing on clouds. Jesus reframes it: it is a present possession and a relationship — knowing and being known by God — that death cannot interrupt and eternity can only deepen.

Application

Don't postpone eternal life to the afterlife — begin enjoying it now by knowing God more. Invest in what lasts forever rather than what perishes, and let the certainty of life beyond death free you to live this one without fear.
