Resurrection

Summary

Resurrection is God's reversal of death — not merely survival of the soul but the raising of the body to new, deathless life. It is the Bible's astonishing claim that death is real, but it is not the end. Christ's own resurrection is the hinge of history and the heart of the gospel. Because he rose, those who are his will rise too, and the whole creation will share in the renewal.

Witnesses

In the Old Testament

Hints of resurrection glimmer in the Old Testament before they blaze. Daniel saw the day when 'many who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake' — some to everlasting life. Job longed to see God in his flesh, and the Psalms refused to believe God would abandon his holy one to the grave.

In the New Testament

Jesus declared, 'I am the resurrection and the life,' then proved it by rising from the dead — 'the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.' His resurrection guarantees ours, and even now believers are raised to 'walk in newness of life.'

Common Misconception

Many imagine the Christian hope is a disembodied soul drifting in heaven forever. Scripture says more: God will raise and renew our bodies. Salvation is not escape from the physical world but its redemption — a real life, in a real new creation.

Application

Live in resurrection hope. Death is a defeated enemy, so grief for believers is real but not hopeless. And because you've been raised with Christ to new life, leave the old ways in the grave and live now as one who belongs to the world that is coming.
