The Law
Summary
The Law is God's instruction to his people — revealing his holy character, exposing human sin, and showing the shape of a life that pleases him. Far from arbitrary rules, it was given in love to a people already redeemed. The Law could direct life but never grant it. Its commands diagnosed a problem they could not cure, preparing the way for the One who would fulfill it perfectly.

In the Old Testament
At Sinai God gave the Ten Commandments and called Israel to love him with all their heart. The Law was treasured as a gift: 'The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul.' It marked Israel out and taught them to long for righteousness from the heart.
In the New Testament
Jesus said, 'I have not come to abolish the Law but to fulfill it.' He kept it perfectly and bore its curse, so that 'the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us' by the Spirit. The Law's deepest aim — love of God and neighbor — is now written on believers' hearts.
Common Misconception
Two errors pull at us: treating the Law as a ladder to earn God's acceptance, or dismissing it as irrelevant now that grace has come. Scripture avoids both — the Law cannot save, but it still reveals God's righteous heart and guides those already saved by grace.
Application
Stop using God's commands to earn what Christ has already given. Instead, let the Law show you your need of grace and then guide your grateful obedience. Aim at its heart — wholehearted love for God and neighbor — empowered now by the Spirit within.
